Since Z4's have recently been an item of discussion, I just wanted to bring up my belief that the original Z4 was the best. Every iteration since exists as corporate whitewashing of what was a unique and, while fun, still mature design language.
Many of the character lines are exquisitely related to one another in a way that is not often seen (the 3rd gen Lexus IS being one of those few outliers).

And then there’s the ‘detented’ side markers inbedded beneath the logo — I mean, come on! It’s wonderful.

See, you didn’t update your publish time to reflect when you actually finished writing this, and I look like an idiot with my hour rule.
So back to the matter at hand: if you had to buy a cheap BMW convertible, say under 7k, what model/year would you aim for?

I think it actually ended up working out that right after pressing publish, I saw your hour rule post (and I was refreshing the oppo homepage on a separate computer to see if you had hour’d yet or not) — I was trying to beat ya to it! :) But also duly noted about going back up and updating the ‘post time’ before publishing (I’m still learning!)
As for cheap BMW convertible, it really would have to be the Z4 for me . I tend to find most coupes that are also made as convertibles look like compromises, so I’d prefer a dedicated roadster design, and the Z3 has age / demerits to it that I feel the Z4 remedies quite well.

Such a looker! Though, are those fake ‘Brembo’ caliper covers? Weak...

This one is my favorite, not that it matters. :)

I always thought it was cool that the lines form a Z on the other side (trace the hood and then go down at the A pillar).

Was fortunate enough to log a lot of time in a Z3 and then a Z4 owned back-to-back by a family member back when they both were new cars. If I was choosing between the two (an an M wasn’t on the table) I’d personally go with a post-facelift Z3, with a 3.0 engine if possible, and a manual transmission. More classically beautiful to me and a more analog driving experience than the Z4. Both great models though.

The 1st-gen Z4 is one of my all time favorite designs, along with the Z8. Such a fantastic interplay of linework going on there. I miss that era of design. Other greats from that era for me are the 1st gen Audi TT, 350Z, even the Nissan Murano of that era has some really nice linework and simple surfacing.

The OG Z4 has aged really well. The two best versions looks wise are the sport package at the very beginning of the run, and the M.
